Now Your Colors Sing: Chagall and the School of Paris
(co-sponsored with Lakeview Museum)
After arriving in Paris in 1910, the painter Marc Chagall helped forge a vibrant school of artists seeking to articulate the experience of modern life. Like Chagall, many of the artists of the School of Paris happened to be Jews who sought the promise of modern art in the City of Light. This lecture explores the role Chagall, along with his fellow Jewish artists, played in the development of modernism before the tragedy of World War II and the extent to which the experience of growing up Jewish led to some of the most modern statements in 20th-century art.
Miranda Hofelt's presentation was planned in conjunction with Lakeview Museum's exhibit featuring works on paper by Chagall along with works by Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, three of the most important artists of the 20th century. All three were skilled painters and printmakers, and all three dramatically influenced the course of art and how we see the world.
The works featured in this exhibit were drawn from a private collection in central Illinois and will be on display in the Picasso Matisse Chagall exhibit at Lakeview Museum from November 22, 2008 through March 15, 2009.
Ms. Hofelt earned her B.A. at Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio, and her M.A. at the University of Pittsburgh. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Art History at the University of Chicago. Ms. Hofelt is an adjunct lecturer at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she has served in a variety of interpretive positions since 1995.
