The Genius of Mark Twain

(held at the First Baptist Church, 411 W. Lake Ave., Peoria IL)

Dr. Engel brings to life the author most critics call our greatest American author using anecdotes, analysis, and large doses of humor. Professor Engel sets the background for an appreciation of Twain's classic works.

Originally from Indianapolis, Dr. Engel now resides in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he has taught courses at North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina, and Duke University. Dr. Engel earned his M.A. and Ph.D. as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA. While at UCLA he won the university's Outstanding Teacher Award. In addition, for his scholarship and teaching he has received North Carolina's Adult Education Award and the Victorian Society Award of Merit.

Dr. Engel has written seven books published both in England and the United States. The most recent, A Dab of Dickens & A Touch of Twain, was released by Simon & Shuster. Many of his articles have appeared in national magazines, including Newsweek. Professor Engel has written three plays which have been produced during the last five years. PBS Television stations around the country aired Professor Engel's mini-lecture series on his favorite author, Charles Dickens.

He continues to lecture year-round throughout the U.S. and in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
