Glass and Light

One of the nation's leading contemporary glass sculptors, Christopher Ries will explain his method of transforming blocks of solid optical crystal into exquisite works of art. He will also expound on what he sees as the role of glass in both art and photonics.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Ries earned his BFA degree from Ohio State University and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. While at Madison, he was the personal assistant to Harvey K. Littleton, considered by many to be the father of the 20th century Studio Glass Movement.

Today Ries lives in rural Pennsylvania, and his luminous creations are found in major collections and museums around the United States, Europe and Japan. They are noted for their brilliant and ever-changing internal illusions as well as for their technical proficiency.
