Beauty or Blasphemy: Representations
of the Virgin Mary in Contemporary Art

The Virgin Mary is one of the most highly venerated and frequently depicted women in the history of Western art. Her place in the world of contemporary art is, however, marked by contention, debate and confusion. Dr. Sarah Glover, Assistant Professor of Art at Bradley University, will examine the ways in which several contemporary artists have approached the subject of the Virgin Mary and consider both the devotional and the controversial responses their work has elicited.

As an art historian, Dr. Glover specializes in medieval manuscript illumination and Marian devotion. She has spoken and written on representations of the Virgin in medieval as well as contemporary culture and currently is organizing an exhibit of contemporary art representing the Virgin Mary from Islamic, Christian and Jewish perspectives.

In 2002 Dr. Glover lectured to the Fine Arts Society on "The Art of the Nativity."

When and where to hear this lecture: Thursday, January 10, 2008, at 10 a.m., Lakeview Museum, 1125 West Lake Ave., Peoria, Illinois.

Other programs in the Fine Arts Society's 2007-2008 lectures series: "The Guitar in Art" with Dr. Lily Afshar, "Glass and Light" with Christopher Ries, "The First and the Last in Rembrandt's Prints" with Dr. Paul Crenshaw, "Romanian Sculptor Constantin Brâncuşi: Combining Elegance and Sensitivity" with Mariana Carpinişan, "Special Exhibitions: Behind the Scenes" with Dr. Sidney Goldstein and "On High Ground: The Documentation of Buddhist Art in the Indian Himalayas" with Dr. Rob Linrothe.
