The First and the Last in Rembrandt's Prints

(co-sponsored with Lakeview Museum)

The infirm and the destitute played an important role in Rembrandt's imagery over the course of his career in 17th century Holland. Dr. Paul Crenshaw, Assistant Professor of Art History at Washington University in St. Louis, will survey Rembrandt's images of beggars, re-examine interpretations of his wife's supposed illness and see the culmination of his views on the poor and their salvation in his most famous print, "Christ Preaching" (also known as "The Hundred Guilder Print").

Dr. Crenshaw's program was planned in conjunction with an extraordinary Lakeview Museum exhibit featuring selections from the John Villarino Collection. Entitled "Sordid and Sacred: The Beggars in Rembrandt's Etchings," this exhibit is set for Nov. 10, 2007-Feb. 17, 2008, and will include 35 rare etchings executed by Rembrandt between 1629 and 1654.

Although Professor Crenshaw's main field of research and teaching is Dutch art of the 17th century, he also teaches Introduction to Western Art, Baroque art in general and Northern Renaissance Art. His seminars focus on such masters as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Artemisia Gentileschi.

Before joining the Washington University faculty, Dr. Crenshaw worked as a photo-archivist at the Frick Art Reference Library, a research associate for the International Foundation for Art Research and an education lecturer at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He also taught at the City University of New York, College of Staten Island. The Hundred Guilder Print
