The Guitar in Art

For many centuries there have been graphic testimonies in which the guitar appears perfectly represented. In addition to tracing the presence of this popular instrument in works of art from early Rome to the present, internationally renowned classical guitarist Lily Afshar will perform selections by composers who lived during the same periods as the pictures (which she'll discuss) were painted.

Historical and social circumstances leading to the creation of each piece will be outlined, and Dr. Afshar will show slides featuring paintings by such masters as Ingres, Manet, Picasso, Braque and Renoir.

This will be Lily Afshar's second visit to the Fine Arts Society, her earlier one having taken place in October, 2004. At that time she lectured and performed music inspired by the etchings of Francisco Goya and written by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, one of the 20th century's most prolific composers. The title of her much-appreciated program was "Goya's 'Los Caprichos' with Guitar Accompaniment."

During a luncheon held in her honor on that occasion, the idea for a lecture/slide presentation/musical performance based on the "Guitar in Art" theme was born. Upon her return from Peoria to the University of Memphis – where she is Head of the Guitar program –, Dr. Afshar began almost immediately to research and develop the material for her 2007 presentation.

The impeccable technique and remarkable musical talent of Lily Afshar can be savored on the following CDs: "24 Caprichos de Goya," "A Jug of Wine and Thou," "Possession" (2002) and "Hemispheres" (2006).

When and where to enjoy "The Guitar in Art": Thursday, October 11, 2007, at 10 a.m., Lakeview Museum, 1125 West Lake Ave., Peoria, Illinois.
