Lyonel Feininger, Our Cubist Cousin

Kicking off the 2006-2007 lecture season is Dr. Esther Sparks, former Fine Arts Society board member and museum exhibition curator. This noted art history professor (and one of the group's most popular lecturers) will dedicate her program to the incomparable Lyonel Feininger, whom she describes as "a rich and multi-talented artist." He is claimed both by America, where he was born and ended his career, and by Germany, where he worked for 50 years. Feininger is best known for his Cubist landscapes and his Bauhaus teaching, and his story truly is the story of modern art in the 20th century. Dr. Sparks also will delineate Feininger's remarkable accomplishments in such varied fields as comic strips and classical music.

Previously Esther Sparks spoke to the Fine Arts Society about Benjamin West (1968), James Abbott McNeil Whistler (1969), Paul Klee (1971), Mary Cassatt (1975), Vincent Van Gogh (1979), Rembrandt van Rijn (1983), "Artists of Virgin America" (1986), American printmakers (1995) and folk artists (2003). She currently is a visiting professor at Northwestern University, Valparaiso University and the University of Mississippi.
