The Roots of Modern Art in Brazil

Some of the most gifted painters and sculptors that Brazil produced in the first half of the 20th century studied art in Paris, London, Berlin and Rome before and after World War I. Those artists brought back to Brazil the stimulating new ideas of Expressionism, Cubism, Constructivism, Abstraction and, later, Surrealism. Dr. José M. Neistein, head of the Brazilian-American Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C., and noted lecturer and author on Brazilian art, will examine the impact of European art in Brazil. He will also address the creative, imaginative and often original responses Brazilian artists gave to Europe and the international art scene.
