Five Women Artists We Should Know About and Why

Although volumes have been written about women artists – especially in recent years –, most remain relatively unknown to the general public. Dr. Judith W. Mann, Curator of Early European Art at the St. Louis Art Museum, will discuss five of her favorite "less well-known" women painters: Artemisia Gentileschi (Italian, 1593-1654); Judith Leyster (Dutch, 1609-1660); Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun (French, 1755-1842); Angelica Kauffmann (Swiss, 1741-1807) and Rosa Bonheur (French, 1822-99). As she will demonstrate, they all lived interesting lives, produced marvelous works and should be part of everyone's mental encyclopedia of art history.

This will be Judith Mann's second appearance before the Fine Arts Society. In 2004 she presented a highly regarded program entitled "The Glorious Paintings of Federico Barocci: 16th Century Master from Urbino."

When and where to hear this lecture: Thursday, December 14, 2006, at 10 a.m., Lakeview Museum, 1125 West Lake Ave., Peoria, Illinois.

Other programs in the Fine Arts Society's 2006-2007 lectures series: "Lyonel Feininger, Our Cubist Cousin" with Dr. Esther Sparks, "Ansel Adams: A Son's Perspective" with Dr. Michael Adams, "The Trials, Travels and Triumphs of a Public Sculptor" with Fisher Stolz, "Love's Messenger: Victorian Tokens of Affection" with Dr. Debra Mancoff, "The Roots of Modern Art in Brazil" with Dr. José M.
