More Than Meets the Eye: The Art of Trompe L'Oeil

(co-sponsored with Lakeview Museum)

Since ancient times, artists have sought to create the illusion of reality by skillfully manipulating their materials. For example, through the technique of "trompe l'oeil," painters carefully orchestrate scale, texture and light to produce the effect of three-dimensional objects occupying an extension of the viewer's own space. Dr. Eric Denker, senior lecturer at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., will show how Western artists beginning with Giotto in Renaissance Italy and extending to more recent Dutch, French and American painters have delighted in their ability to suggest form and volume onto recognizably flat surfaces. His lecture was planned in conjunction with the Lakeview Museum exhibit "Trompe L'Oeil: The Art of Illusion," which is set for March 17-May 13, 2007.

On previous visits to the Fine Arts Society, Dr. Denker spoke about Vincent Van Gogh and James Abbott McNeil Whistler.

When and where to hear this lecture: Thursday, April 12, 2007, at 10 a.m., Lakeview Museum, 1125 West Lake Ave., Peoria, Illinois.
