Chicago: Birthplace of Modern Architecture

From its earliest days, when pioneers invented the balloon frame, Chicago has been a setting for architectural innovation. This lecture is an introduction to Chicago's place in the history of architecture and to the works of four men who called Chicago home: William Le Baron Jenney, inventor of the skyscraper; Louis Sullivan, modern architecture's first theorist, and two of America's most famous modern architects, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe. Presenter Timothy Wittman is an art history professor, preservation specialist and educational consultant for the Chicago Architecture Foundation.
