A Day at the Art Institute of Chicago

Saturday, May 5, 2007

Bus departs from Lakeview at 6:30 a.m.
Estimated return at 7 p.m.

Explore One of the World's Great Museums.

Situated in a building constructed for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1892-93, the Art Institute houses more than 300,000 works of art. It is perhaps most famous for its collections of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and American paintings.

Moreover, the museum boasts many fine sculptures, the intriguing Thorne Miniature Rooms and outstanding collections of photography, prints and drawings, arms and armor, textiles, decorative art and Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican ceramic figures. The Museum Shop on Michigan Avenue offers apparel and accessories, books, jewelry, home furnishings and art from around the world.

In 2006 the Art Institute began construction of "The Modern Wing," an addition on the southwest corner of Columbus and Monroe. Completion of the project, designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Renzo Piano, is scheduled for 2009.
